Closer than you think

6 December, 2011

The country lifestyle of Bluestone Mount Barker may feel like a long way from the city, but as Amy and Ben Chudleigh discovered, it's much closer than you think.

"We have been married for four years and rented a house in Plympton Park for the first three years of our married life," Amy said.

"We wanted to buy a house, but we really liked the idea of building. We discovered that if you want a decent size block at a decent price, you either have to go far south or north of Adelaide. Then we went for a drive to Mount Barker and were very surprised how quickly we got there. It's just 15 minutes up the freeway."

Since moving into their new home at Bluestone about a year ago, Ben has started a job in Mount Barker while Amy has found driving to the city each morning surprisingly convenient.

"I will get to work in about 35 minutes every morning - five minutes to the Freeway, 15 minutes down the Freeway, then 15 minutes along Glen Osmond road and into the city. It is perfect. The traffic is very rarely a problem," she said.

"Ironically, it is actually quicker to get to work now from Mount Barker than it was when we lived at Plympton Park. It used to take me 45 minutes on a good day. I was always stuck on Marion Road and Anzac Highway."

Of course, there were many other reasons why Ben, 28, and Amy, 25, chose to live at Bluestone.

"Bluestone had all the extras. It has lots of parks, running tracks, outdoor gym equipment and really amazing playgrounds. We could see ourselves staying here long term and raising a family. We also liked that Bluestone was the only Telstra Smart Community with amazing Fibre Optic Cables. Now we have the most perfect HD Television and super fast internet. We have never had an issue," Amy said.

"The other aspect we love is the feel of Mount Barker. It's really relaxing so when we're home we really feel 'at home'. The community environment is very strong. It feels a bit like a country town where you know lots of people, but still has everything you need. The other great thing is that we're only half an hour away from Goolwa beach. It's a really nice drive."

Building a home at Bluestone was a new experience for the young couple, but one they thoroughly enjoyed.

"We ended up designing our own house and also building it ourselves," Amy said.

"Bluestone was fantastic and very well organised. We found it very easy to get the information and assistance we needed in regards to all the encumbrances and rules."

One year on, the Chudleighs are confident they've found what they were looking for.
"We wanted a safe place to raise a family and that's what we've got," Amy said.
"We have really been enjoying lots of the community events that are run by Bluestone and around Mount Barker. We have been getting to know lots of our neighbours and it's been great to meet everyone. It feels like a really safe neighbourhood."
